Chennai Residents Successfully Halt Construction of Illegal Road on Thiruvanmiyur Beach

Residents of Thiruvanmiyur in Chennai took swift action to prevent the construction of an illegal road on the beachfront near Arupadai Veedu Temple. After local residents raised concerns, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) promptly removed three heaps of bituminous material, allegedly placed by an elected representative for the unauthorized road. The GCC assured residents that no unauthorized construction would be allowed, emphasizing the violation of Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) regulations.

Despite attempts to build similar unauthorized roads in the past, judicial interventions and judgments from the Madras High Court have prevented such actions. The GCC zonal engineer confirmed the removal of the debris, stating that no road would be laid until proper sanctions were awarded. Furthermore, the Corporation plans to prevent heavy vehicles from accessing the pathway in front of the temple to avoid further incidents of debris dumping.
