CJI Chandrachud Praises New Criminal Justice Laws as a Landmark for Indian Society

Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud hailed the enactment of new criminal justice laws as a watershed moment for Indian society, emphasizing that they signify a significant overhaul of the country’s criminal justice system. These new laws, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Act, introduce much-needed improvements to protect victim interests and carry out efficient investigation and prosecution of offenses.

CJI Chandrachud highlighted the challenges posed by the digital landscape to the criminal justice system and emphasized the importance of safeguarding the privacy of both the accused and the victim in digitized proceedings. He called for continuous introspection and investment in infrastructure to ensure the effectiveness of the new laws. Finally, he stressed the need for a justice-oriented, civil liberty-centric approach to enhance the efficiency of India’s criminal justice system.
