Daily Reports on CCTV Conditions Ordered After Alleged Custodial Death in Kolkata

Following the alleged custodial death at Amherst Street Police Station in Kolkata, the officers-in-charge of all city police stations have been instructed to submit daily reports on the working conditions of the CCTVs installed in their workplaces. An internal probe into the incident revealed that the CCTV in the area where the victim’s body was found was non-functional.

In response, all Kolkata police stations have been directed to provide daily updates on the status of their CCTVs to the city headquarters. This measure aims to keep top officials informed about the condition of these surveillance cameras and expedite repairs for non-functional units.

Last week, a notification was issued to subject all police stations to extensive CCTV surveillance, but financial constraints have hindered further progress in expanding coverage beyond the existing 900 cameras covering 24 police stations in the Kolkata Police jurisdiction.
