Hawaii’s Maui Island Wildfires Claim 53 Lives, Devastation Mounts

Tragedy has struck Hawaii’s Maui Island as devastating hurricane-driven wildfires have claimed the lives of at least 53 people, with authorities warning that the death toll could rise further. Amid active firefighting efforts, 17 additional fatalities were confirmed in the Lahaina fire, bringing the toll to 53.

The historic community of Lahaina has suffered widespread destruction, leaving many displaced residents grappling with the aftermath. The town, with a few exceptions, has been consumed by the flames, according to Hawaii’s Governor Josh Green.

US President Joe Biden has declared a disaster, allowing federal aid to support local recovery. The federal response promises immediate assistance to those affected by the wildfires, which engulfed Lahaina due to strong winds on Tuesday night.
