Heavy Rains Flood Over 100 Homes in Chennai’s Palavoyal
Heavy rains in Chennai caused severe flooding in Palavoyal near Red Hills on Wednesday, affecting more than 100 homes and leaving over 200 residents stranded in waterlogged areas.
Several neighborhoods, including Kumaran Nagar and Murugan Street, were badly affected as rainwater entered houses and streets. In many places, water levels rose to chest height, making movement extremely difficult for residents.
The flooding was especially severe because Palavoyal is a low-lying area with poor drainage infrastructure. Local residents said the region often experiences flooding even during moderate rainfall.
According to residents, the situation became worse after nearby lakes overflowed, sending additional water into residential areas. M. Aravind, a resident of Kumaran Nagar, explained that even small amounts of rain create major problems due to the area’s vulnerable location.
Water also heavily affected Sothupakkam Main Road, disrupting daily life and transportation.
Fire and Rescue Services launched emergency operations to help trapped residents. Rescue teams successfully evacuated 56 people, including 18 children, using trucks and boats to move them to safer locations.
Residents said that rainwater from the main road usually drains into Singilimedu Lake, but overflow and poor drainage systems contributed significantly to this latest flooding crisis.
The incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for better drainage systems and flood management infrastructure in Chennai’s vulnerable suburban areas.
