Lula da Silva Positions Brazil as Global Player During U.S. Visit

Brazilian President Lula da Silva visited Washington amid speculation about the upcoming elections. Far-right candidate Flávio Bolsonaro’s trip to Miami added fuel to the rumors. Despite tensions, Lula met with Donald Trump for three hours at the White House.

The visit focused on tariffs and rare earth minerals. Last year, Trump imposed 50% tariffs on Brazilian goods. Both leaders agreed to form a working group to resolve tariff issues within 30 days. Lula emphasized Brazil’s sovereignty during discussions.

Rare earth minerals were a key topic. Brazil holds the world’s second-largest reserves, making it a strategic partner for the U.S. in its competition with China. Lula sought investments from the U.S. but vowed not to export raw materials without benefits for Brazil. A new law regulating critical minerals was approved by Congress.

Lula avoided discussing elections with Trump, keeping the focus on international issues. Analysts viewed the meeting as a success for Brazil, despite tensions. This was their third meeting since Trump returned to power. Future discussions at the G7 summit and during Trump’s trip to Beijing are expected to intensify.
