Tangedco Advances Towards Automated Meter Reading System

The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) is taking steps toward implementing an automated meter reading system to enhance accuracy and efficiency. Currently, a trial of this system is being conducted in 440 electricity distribution circles across the state. Five section offices of the electricity distribution circles have been selected for this purpose.

The new system aims to eliminate the need for manual reading of electricity meters by assessors, streamlining the process of downloading units directly from the meters. Field assessors and local engineering staff will initially test the automated downloading of units before expanding the implementation statewide. This move by Tangedco is anticipated to benefit domestic consumers who have encountered issues with manual reading errors.

Additionally, this initiative could pave the way for the introduction of smart meters, funded by the central government, in the coming year. The incorporation of special software will facilitate the direct downloading of readings from the meters’ optical ports, automating the process and reducing manual intervention.
