“Film Stars Condemn Iran’s Crackdown on Protesters”

Around 800 film professionals, including Oscar winners Juliette Binoche, Marion Cotillard, and director Yorgos Lanthimos, have signed a statement condemning the Iranian government for its violent crackdown on protesters. They criticized Tehran for killing and torturing its own citizens.

The statement said: “We, the undersigned, with anger and grief, strongly condemn the crimes committed by the Islamic Republic of Iran against protesting civilians.”

It added that in response to public protests against repression, poverty, discrimination, and injustice, the Iranian government chose violence over listening. The authorities used live ammunition, mass killings, widespread arrests, torture, enforced disappearances, and even shut down the internet across the country.

The statement reflects the film community’s concern over the human rights abuses in Iran and calls for global awareness and action.
