Electricity Demand Rises in Tamil Nadu Amid Heatwave
Several parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, are facing increased power demand this September as unusually high temperatures continue across the state. The extended summer-like weather has pushed electricity consumption to record levels and has resulted in unscheduled power cuts in some areas.
Tamil Nadu’s power demand has increased to around 20,500 MW, compared with about 16,000–17,000 MW during the same period last year. The sharp rise has created a shortage of more than 3,000 MW, putting additional pressure on the state’s power distribution system.
To manage the shortage, the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) has reportedly purchased an additional 2,000 MW of electricity. Officials are taking steps to meet the growing demand and maintain a stable supply across different parts of the state.
Chennai Sees Sharp Increase in Demand
Chennai has also experienced a major increase in electricity consumption. The city’s demand has reached around 4,200–4,500 MW, compared with its usual demand of approximately 3,500–3,800 MW during this period.
The higher demand has placed additional pressure on the power network. Some residential areas have experienced repeated interruptions, leading to frustration among residents.
Several areas of Chennai, including Madipakkam, Tambaram, Velachery, and Anna Nagar, have reported power-related problems. Residents have also raised concerns about a lack of clear information regarding scheduled maintenance and power restoration.
Protests Over Power Cuts
The power disruptions have also resulted in protests in different parts of Tamil Nadu. Residents in areas such as Tirunelveli, Tiruchi, and Ambasamudram reportedly held demonstrations after experiencing power cuts, particularly during the night.
Similar protests were reported in Royapuram and Tiruvallur. In Tiruvallur, residents reportedly blocked a road on September 10 following a prolonged power outage.
In Thandurai village, residents faced electricity disruptions for more than eight hours a day because of cable damage near Paruthipattu. The power supply has since been restored in the area.
Officials Monitor the Situation
TNPDCL officials have said that steps are being taken to maintain a stable electricity supply across the state. In Chennai, senior officials are closely monitoring the power grid and responding to complaints from residents.
The authorities are also working to address technical problems and reduce the impact of unexpected outages. With electricity demand remaining high because of the continued heat, officials are expected to closely monitor consumption and supply levels.
The situation highlights the pressure that extreme and prolonged heat can place on power infrastructure. As temperatures remain high, maintaining a reliable electricity supply will remain a major challenge for Tamil Nadu, particularly in high-demand areas such as Chennai.
