Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Dies; Dubai Enters Mourning Period

Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the younger brother of Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has died at the age of 76. His death was announced by the Ruler’s Court on September 21, 2026.

Following his death, Dubai declared a 10-day official mourning period beginning September 21. During this period, flags across the emirate will be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect.

Sheikh Ahmed was a prominent figure in Dubai’s public, sporting and business life. He served as Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Services and was also associated with ARM Holding, a UAE-based private investment company.

He was particularly well known for his long association with Al Wasl Sports Club, where he served as president for decades. He played an important role in the club’s development and supported several sports, including football, basketball, volleyball and handball. Under his leadership, Al Wasl became one of the UAE’s prominent sporting clubs.

Sheikh Ahmed also had a strong connection with horse racing and maritime sports. He was involved in the development of horse racing facilities in Dubai and played a role in establishing the Dubai International Marine Club.

His funeral prayer is scheduled to be held at Za’abeel Grand Mosque in Dubai on September 22. Condolences will also be received at Za’abeel Majlis during the mourning period.

Several leaders have expressed condolences to the Al Maktoum family. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan praised Sheikh Ahmed’s long-standing contributions to the development of the country. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences to Sheikh Mohammed and the people of Dubai.

The 10-day mourning period is expected to bring a more subdued atmosphere across Dubai. Government work and public activities may be affected, while live entertainment events and official gatherings can be cancelled or postponed as a mark of respect.

Sheikh Ahmed’s death marks the loss of a senior member of Dubai’s ruling family who was closely associated with the emirate’s public service, sports and development over several decades.
