Mets put starter Christian Scott on IL and activate reliever Devin Williams for final few games

The New York Mets have placed starting pitcher Christian Scott on the 15-day injured list because of left knee inflammation, ending his 2026 season. The move came after Scott experienced a drop in velocity during his most recent start against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Mets interim manager Andy Green said Scott slipped while warming up before the Philadelphia game. According to Green, Scott did not immediately tell the team about the problem, and his knee later became swollen. Green said there was no reason to risk further injury by asking Scott to make another start so close to the end of the season.

Scott returned to the Mets rotation this season after missing all of 2025 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He made 23 starts in 2026 and finished with a 4-5 record, a 3.85 ERA and 134 strikeouts. MLB lists him with 110 innings pitched this season, while the Associated Press reported 111 innings.

The Mets have also activated reliever Devin Williams from the injured list. Williams had been sidelined with a right shoulder strain and had not pitched since August 7. His return gives the Mets another experienced option for their bullpen during the final games of the regular season.

Williams has recorded a 3-2 record, a 4.66 ERA and 16 saves in 42 appearances during his first season with the Mets. The two-time All-Star closer signed a three-year, $51 million contract with New York in December.

While Williams was recovering, Kodai Senga had been handling closing duties for the Mets. Green said the team hopes Williams can appear in a couple of games before the season ends, while his long-term role remains clear within the club’s plans.

The Mets are now focused on managing their pitching staff through the final games of the season. Scott will continue his recovery from the knee problem, while the team will look to gradually bring Williams back into game action after his shoulder injury.
