Asian Games 2026: India’s Medal Count and Highlights

India added five more medals on Wednesday at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, taking its overall tally to 12 medals. The total includes one gold, five silver and six bronze medals. India was placed 13th in the overall medal table at the end of the day.

The biggest achievement of the day came from Mirabai Chanu, who won the silver medal in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event. Chanu lifted a combined 198kg, including 87kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk.

The medal was particularly significant because it was Chanu’s first Asian Games medal. It also ended India’s 28-year wait for a medal in Asian Games weightlifting. Karnam Malleswari had been the last Indian weightlifter to win an Asian Games medal when she claimed silver in 1998.

Badminton Team Wins Bronze

India’s men’s badminton team also secured a bronze medal after losing 3-1 to China in the semifinal.

India faced a difficult challenge against the Chinese team. Lakshya Sen lost his singles match, while Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won their doubles match to keep India in contention. China then regained the advantage in the following matches and secured a place in the final.

Despite the semifinal defeat, India received the bronze medal for reaching the last four.

Two Bronze Medals in Skeet Shooting

Indian shooters added two more bronze medals through the women’s and men’s skeet team events.

The women’s team of Raiza Dhillon, Maheshwari Chauhan and Parinaaz Dhaliwal finished third with a combined score of 331 points. China and Kazakhstan finished ahead of India.

In the men’s event, Anantjeet Singh Naruka, Mairaj Ahmad Khan and Bhavtegh Singh Gill won bronze with a combined score of 346 points. The two medals further increased India’s contribution from shooting at the Games.

Jay Meena Makes Soft Tennis History

Jay Meena created history by winning India’s first-ever Asian Games medal in soft tennis.

Meena reached the semifinal of the men’s singles competition before losing to Japan’s Takuya Kurosaka. His semifinal appearance guaranteed India a medal, with the loss resulting in a bronze.

The achievement marked a new milestone for Indian soft tennis at the Asian Games.

Women’s Cricket Team Wins Gold

India’s only gold medal so far has come from the women’s cricket team. Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, India defeated Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final.

India scored 216/3 after batting first, with major contributions from Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma and Richa Ghosh. Sri Lanka were then bowled out for just 69 runs.

The victory gave India the women’s cricket gold medal and continued the team’s strong record in the Asian Games.

Manu Bhaker Misses Out on Medal

Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker narrowly missed a podium finish in the women’s 10m air pistol event. She entered the final after qualifying in third position but eventually finished fifth.

South Korea’s Choo Gaeun won the gold medal, while Chinese shooters took the silver and bronze positions.

India’s Esha Singh and Suruchi Inder Singh did not reach the final, finishing 15th and 26th respectively in qualification.

India’s women’s team also finished fourth in the team event, missing the bronze medal on the basis of the inner-10 count.

With 12 medals already secured, India’s campaign continues across several sports at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. The Indian contingent will look to add more medals as the competition moves into its next stages.
