Karnataka CM Seeks Central Drought Aid
Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking increased financial assistance from the Centre to deal with the state’s worsening drought situation. The request comes amid concerns over deficient rainfall, crop losses and falling water levels.
Shivakumar has asked for 50% of the central drought assistance to help the state manage the impact of the rainfall shortage. The request comes as Karnataka continues to assess the damage caused to agriculture and water resources.
The state has already declared 101 taluks as drought-hit, while the government has indicated that more areas could be added based on the prescribed assessment process. Shivakumar has also warned that the situation could lead to shortages of drinking water and electricity in several parts of the state.
Reduced rainfall has affected agricultural activities across Karnataka. Earlier, Shivakumar said that more than 200 of the state’s 239 taluks were facing drought conditions. The weak monsoon has also affected groundwater levels and increased concerns about crop damage.
The state government has been seeking support from the Centre as it works to provide relief to affected farmers and communities. In July, Shivakumar had also written to the Prime Minister seeking a central team to assess the emerging drought situation. At that time, he said 18 of Karnataka’s 31 districts had recorded deficient to large-deficient rainfall.
Water availability is another major concern. Falling groundwater levels and reduced rainfall have increased pressure on drinking-water resources. The state government is also preparing for possible additional demand for electricity as it manages the effects of the drought.
The financial requirement for drought relief is also adding pressure to Karnataka’s budget. The state Finance Department has warned that the severe drought could create a significant need for additional funds for drought relief and drinking-water arrangements.
The request for central assistance comes as Karnataka’s legislature discusses the drought situation and the measures needed to support affected areas. The state government is continuing its assessment of rainfall, crop damage and water availability while seeking financial support for relief measures.
