Chennai Braces for Monsoon with Extensive Flood Mitigation Measures
As heavy rains from the Northeast monsoon lashed Chennai, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inspected key flood mitigation efforts on November 26, 2024. Rainfall data revealed New Manali Town received the highest at 133.1 mm, while several northern and southern areas recorded over 60 mm. Despite some roads being temporarily inundated, efficient drainage prevented prolonged flooding. The Deputy CM visited desilting projects at Virugambakkam Canal and Otteri Nullah, crucial waterways that channel rainwater into the Cooum River.
Over 1,221 metric tonnes of silt have been removed since November 21 as part of these operations. The civic body employed advanced equipment, including floaters and earth movers, for clearing silt and ensuring stormwater flow. Chennai Corporation Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran and Metrowater MD T.G. Vinay joined the inspections, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to minimizing flood risks.
