Chennai Water Board’s Tax Collection Surges to ₹140 Crore in Six Months with Online Payments on the Rise

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has reported a significant increase in tax and charges collection, totaling ₹140 crore for the first half of the financial year ending on September 30. The board has set an ambitious target of ₹200 crore for the same period.

A substantial portion, approximately 80%, of these payments are now made through online transactions, a trend expected to gain further momentum as cash payments are phased out starting October 1. CMWSSB is taking steps to facilitate this transition by placing 216 boxes near cash counters at the depot and area offices for consumers to drop demand drafts or cheques. The board serves around 14 lakh consumers in Chennai and its extended areas.
