Concerns Arise as Yelahanka Gas-Based Power Plant Begins Trials

As Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd. (KPCL) initiates trial runs at the 370 Mega Watt (MW) gas-based power plant in Yelahanka, nearby residents express distress over the excessive smoke and noise emanating from the facility, leading to health concerns. Despite facing opposition from locals and environmentalists due to its location between Puttenahalli and Yelahanka lakes, the project moves forward after legal battles and logistical hurdles.

The Supreme Court’s November 2023 order permitted a six-month trial run period, with the Pollution Control Board tasked to monitor air quality and submit reports. Residents report experiencing chemical smells, coughing among children, and discomfort, while KPCL officials assure the public of minimal emissions and restricted trial operations during the daytime to mitigate the inconvenience.
