Exploring Light Trams as Feeder Service for Kochi Metro

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is set to conduct a feasibility study for implementing ‘light trams’ in the M.G. Road-Menaka-Park Avenue Road-Jos Junction-Thevara loop line corridor, spanning 6.2 kilometers. This initiative follows a meeting between KMRL officials and representatives from HESS Green Mobility, who have experience in implementing light tram services worldwide.

The proposed light tram network aims to serve as a feeder line for the Kochi metro, enhancing connectivity and patronage, especially in densely populated areas like Thevara and West Kochi. These electric-hybrid trams, capable of carrying up to 240 passengers, offer an environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to conventional metro rail systems. If successful, this initiative could pave the way for similar projects in other cities like Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode, further revolutionizing public transportation in Kerala.
