India-Bhutan Hold Fifth Development Talks in Thimphu
Indian and Bhutanese officials met in Thimphu for the fifth round of Development Cooperation Talks to review the progress of projects supported by India. The meeting focused on strengthening the long-standing partnership between the two neighboring countries and ensuring that development projects continue to benefit the people of Bhutan.
The discussions mainly covered projects being carried out under Bhutan’s 13th Five-Year Plan. India is one of Bhutan’s largest development partners and provides financial and technical support for many projects. These projects aim to improve infrastructure, promote economic growth, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for people across Bhutan.
The meeting was co-chaired by India’s Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, and Bhutan’s Dasho Pema Lektup Dorji. Both leaders reviewed the progress of ongoing projects and discussed ways to complete them on time. They highlighted the importance of close cooperation and regular communication to ensure that development work continues smoothly.
During the talks, both sides discussed several important sectors, including roads, bridges, schools, healthcare, digital connectivity, agriculture, and public services. These projects are designed to strengthen Bhutan’s economy and improve access to essential services for people living in both urban and rural areas.
Hydropower was one of the key topics discussed during the meeting. India and Bhutan have worked together on hydropower projects for many years. These projects help Bhutan generate clean electricity, meet its energy needs, and export surplus power to India. This partnership benefits both countries by supporting clean energy production and economic growth.
The officials also discussed improving transport and digital connectivity between India and Bhutan. Better roads, border facilities, and communication networks can make travel, trade, and business easier. Stronger connectivity will also encourage tourism, increase investment, and create new opportunities for businesses in both countries.
Another important topic was sustainable development. Both countries agreed on the need to support environmentally friendly projects while protecting Bhutan’s natural beauty and resources. They discussed promoting clean energy, protecting forests, managing water resources, and supporting climate-friendly development for future generations.
The leaders said that the close relationship between India and Bhutan is based on friendship, trust, and mutual respect. Over the years, the two countries have worked together in many areas, including education, healthcare, trade, security, infrastructure, and cultural exchange. They agreed that continued cooperation would help both nations achieve their development goals.
At the end of the meeting, both sides expressed satisfaction with the progress made under Bhutan’s 13th Five-Year Plan. They reaffirmed their commitment to completing ongoing projects successfully and exploring new opportunities for future cooperation. They also agreed to maintain regular discussions and strengthen coordination between their governments.
Overall, the fifth round of Development Cooperation Talks highlighted the strong partnership between India and Bhutan. The meeting reinforced both countries’ shared commitment to economic development, sustainable growth, regional stability, and the well-being of their people. By continuing to work together, India and Bhutan hope to build a stronger future based on cooperation, friendship, and shared prosperity.
