Jonathan Kuminga Joined Timberwolves for On-Court Fit and Team Connection

Jonathan Kuminga has chosen to join the Minnesota Timberwolves after being impressed by both the basketball opportunity and the personal connection he developed with the team. Although other NBA teams were reportedly prepared to offer him more money, Kuminga decided that Minnesota was the right place for him as he looks to compete for an NBA championship.

The Timberwolves made a strong effort to bring Kuminga to Minnesota. Team officials, including Tim Connelly and Alonzo Gee, visited him in Miami as part of their efforts to convince him to join the team. The personal approach made a strong impression on the young forward and helped him feel that the organization genuinely wanted him.

Anthony Edwards also played an important role in the recruitment process. The Timberwolves star regularly contacted Kuminga and made an effort to maintain a connection with him. Edwards’ frequent calls helped Kuminga feel welcomed and showed him that the team’s players were excited about having him in Minnesota.

The Timberwolves were also looking for help at the power forward position after moving on from Julius Randle and Naz Reid. They wanted a young and athletic player who could contribute on both ends of the court. Kuminga fit that description because of his speed, strength, athletic ability and experience in the NBA.

Kuminga agreed to a two-year contract worth $12.4 million with Minnesota. The deal also includes a player option for the second season, giving him an opportunity to potentially earn more money in the future if he stays healthy and performs well.

The 23-year-old forward entered the NBA with the Golden State Warriors and won an NBA championship as a rookie in 2021. He showed considerable potential during the 2023-24 season, but injuries later affected his progress. He missed much of the following season and struggled to receive consistent playing time with Golden State during the 2025-26 campaign before eventually being traded to the Atlanta Hawks.

Now, Kuminga has a fresh opportunity with the Timberwolves. Minnesota hopes his athleticism and aggressive style can strengthen both its offense and defense. He can attack the basket, finish around the rim and use his physical abilities to defend multiple positions.

The Timberwolves are also working to build stronger team chemistry, with Anthony Edwards playing an important role in bringing the group together. Kuminga believes he can add another level of energy and competitiveness to the team.

For Kuminga, joining Minnesota is about more than simply finding a new team. He sees the move as an opportunity to use what he has learned during his NBA career and help the Timberwolves compete at the highest level.
