Karnataka Cracks Down on Fuel Pump Issues

The Legal Metrology Department in Karnataka inspected 805 petrol pumps across the state as part of a drive to check the accuracy of fuel measurements. Officials found that 768 pumps required recalibration after irregularities were identified during the inspections.

The inspections mainly focused on the accuracy of fuel dispensing machines and whether customers were receiving the correct amount of petrol or diesel for the money they paid. Accurate measurement is important because even small differences in fuel delivery can result in customers receiving less fuel than expected.

Officials also reported 101 cases of violations during the inspections. As part of the action taken, authorities collected fines amounting to Rs 6.66 lakh from the operators involved.

The inspections were carried out after concerns were raised about possible deviations in the accuracy of fuel nozzles. Such deviations can affect the amount of fuel delivered to vehicles and may lead to financial losses for customers.

The Legal Metrology Department is responsible for ensuring that measuring and weighing equipment used in commercial transactions meets required standards. Regular inspections of petrol pumps are intended to help maintain accurate fuel dispensing and protect consumers.

Following the findings, petrol pump operators have been asked to take corrective measures and recalibrate equipment where necessary. The department’s action is part of ongoing efforts to improve compliance and promote fair practices in the fuel retail sector.
