Tamil Nadu’s Labour Department Reaches Out to Migrant Workers in Their Native Languages

Despite Tamil Nadu’s strong opposition to imposing Hindi in the state, the labor department is taking a multilingual approach to reach out to the migrant workers. With a substantial interstate migrant population, including around 67 lakh workers, the department has printed leaflets in languages such as Hindi, Odiya, Bhojpuri, and Bengali.

These leaflets contain helpline numbers for police and welfare departments, details about benefits available to registered workers, and information about state government schemes. The initiative aims to inform migrant workers about their rights and benefits, enhancing their confidence.

Furthermore, plans are underway for a comprehensive survey to assess the conditions, accommodation, health facilities, and living standards of the workers.
