Typhoon Haikui Causes Evacuations and Economic Losses in Fuzhou

Over 36,000 people in Fuzhou, the capital of China’s Fujian province, were temporarily evacuated as Typhoon Haikui brought heavy rainstorms to the region, leading to a direct economic loss of over 552 million yuan ($76 million) as of 7 a.m. Wednesday, according to authorities. The torrential rains caused damage to 147 townships in the city and broke rainfall records at weather stations.

Schools, public transportation, and recreational areas remained closed, with a Level II emergency response for heavy rains in effect for Fujian province since Tuesday night.
