US Imposes Sanctions on Iran’s Weapon Suppliers
The US has announced sanctions against 10 individuals and companies, including some in China and Hong Kong, for helping Iran obtain weapons and materials needed to make drones and missiles. These actions were taken by the US Treasury as part of efforts to stop Iran from rebuilding its military capabilities.
The move comes ahead of President Trump’s trip to China for talks with President Xi Jinping and as attempts to end the conflict with Iran have failed. The Treasury stated it is prepared to target foreign companies, including airlines and financial institutions linked to Chinese oil refineries, that support Iran’s illegal business activities.
Experts believe these steps aim to limit Iran’s ability to threaten ships in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route for global oil and gas. Iran closed this strategic waterway after US and Israeli attacks on its targets in February, causing energy prices to rise as shipping there nearly stopped.
Iran is a major producer of drones and can make around 10,000 per month, showcasing its significant industrial capacity.
