India’s 45th UNESCO Site: Sarnath
The ancient Buddhist site of Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh was recently added as a UNESCO World Heritage Site during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee. This makes India home to 45 UNESCO sites. The meeting took place in Busan, South Korea.
Sarnath is a sacred place for Buddhists worldwide, as it is where the Buddha gave his first teachings after enlightenment. Tim Curtis, a UNESCO official, highlighted its importance, stating that it has been a pilgrimage site for over 2,500 years and continues to inspire people with its message of peace and wisdom.
The site’s inclusion in the UNESCO list came after a long process. Sarnath was first nominated in 1998 and finally inscribed on July 25, 2026. The decision followed careful evaluation by UNESCO experts over an eighteen-month period.
Sarnath includes two main areas: the Chaukhandi Stupa and the Archaeological Remains of Sarnath, which feature famous landmarks like the Dhamekh Stupa, Dharmrajika Stupa, Mulagandgakuti Vihara, and the Ashokan Pillar. These structures represent India’s rich cultural and historical heritage.
