ADB Approves $200M Loan for Bangladesh Power Upgrade
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $200 million loan to help modernize Bangladesh’s electricity distribution network in areas around Dhaka. The project is aimed at improving power infrastructure in regions experiencing rapid industrial and urban growth.
The Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) will be responsible for implementing the project. The upgrades will focus on 13 areas where demand for electricity has been increasing because of the expansion of industries, businesses and residential communities.
The project will support improvements to the existing electricity distribution system. This is expected to help strengthen the network and improve its ability to handle rising demand. Modernizing the infrastructure could also help reduce pressure on the existing system as more homes, factories and commercial establishments require reliable electricity.
Dhaka and its surrounding areas have experienced significant urban and industrial development in recent years. As new factories, businesses and residential areas continue to grow, the demand for electricity has also increased. The ADB-supported project is designed to help the power distribution network keep pace with this growth.
The work will cover 13 selected areas and is expected to include improvements to electricity distribution infrastructure and related facilities. BREB will oversee the implementation and work toward upgrading the network to meet the changing needs of consumers.
