BJP leaders criticize Rahul Gandhi over PM Modi mimicry
A political controversy has erupted in Madhya Pradesh after stand-up comedian Pulkit Mani performed a satirical act involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s student-focused event in Indore.
The incident took place during the “Chhatron Ki Goonj” programme on September 19. Mani appeared on stage with Gandhi and mimicked Modi’s speaking style and mannerisms, including references to the Prime Minister’s interactions with foreign leaders. During the performance, Gandhi addressed the comedian as “Modi ji.”
Another part of the performance referred to Modi’s interaction with an elderly woman at a public event. The segment drew particular criticism from BJP leaders, who said the act was disrespectful to the Prime Minister and to the woman involved.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav criticised the incident and questioned Gandhi’s participation in the performance. Other BJP leaders and Union ministers also attacked the Congress over the event. Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal described the performance as “cheap political theatre.”
The BJP’s criticism extended beyond Goyal. Several party leaders accused Gandhi and the Congress of using the event to target the Prime Minister through political satire. The remarks have added to the ongoing political exchanges between the BJP and Congress.
Congress leaders and supporters have defended the event, arguing that Gandhi’s appearance was connected to his engagement with students and their concerns. Gandhi also used the programme to raise questions about education, employment and the role of students in public life.
During his speech, Gandhi said that a powerful “system” associated with Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah was uncomfortable with students who ask questions. These were Gandhi’s political allegations and were challenged by BJP leaders, including Chief Minister Yadav.
The controversy also had an impact on Pulkit Mani’s upcoming performances. Mani announced that his shows in Noida, Lucknow and Kanpur had been cancelled. He initially cited “unforeseen circumstances” for the Noida cancellation and later said that repeated threats were behind the cancellation of the other shows.
The incident has renewed discussion about political satire, public events and the boundaries of comedy involving political leaders. It has also highlighted how performances involving prominent politicians can quickly become part of wider political disputes.
The controversy remains part of a broader exchange between the BJP and Congress over Gandhi’s Indore programme. The two parties continue to offer different interpretations of the event and the comedian’s performance.
