Brewers Pull Off Thrilling 4-3 Victory Over Cubs
Milwaukee: Jackson Chourio played a key role as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Chicago Cubs 4-3 in a thrilling Major League Baseball game on Monday.
Chourio made an important contribution at the plate and then produced a spectacular defensive play to help the Brewers secure the victory. His performance proved decisive in a close game that went down to the final moments.
The Brewers were trailing 2-1 when they came to bat in the eighth inning. Garrett Mitchell started the rally by drawing a walk. Joey Ortiz then hit a double, allowing Mitchell to advance to third base.
Chourio followed with a ground ball that found a gap in the Cubs’ infield. The hit brought both Mitchell and Ortiz home, giving Milwaukee a 3-2 lead.
The Brewers continued to put pressure on Chicago. Brice Turang walked, but William Contreras struck out. Christian Yelich then hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Milwaukee to add another run and increase the lead to 4-2.
The Cubs refused to give up and made the ninth inning exciting. Pedro Ramírez hit a deep ball that looked capable of tying the game, but Luis Lara made the catch to record an important out.
Pete Crow-Armstrong then gave Chicago another chance. He hit a long home run over the right-center field wall, his first homer of the season against Trevor Megill. The home run reduced Milwaukee’s lead to 4-3.
With the Cubs still threatening, Seiya Suzuki came to the plate. He hit a fly ball toward left field, but Chourio made an outstanding diving catch to end the game and prevent the Cubs from completing their comeback.
The victory gave Megill his 27th save of the season, while Jacob Misiorowski earned the win for Milwaukee after retiring the Cubs in order in the eighth inning. Misiorowski improved his record to 5-2.
Cubs starting pitcher Matthew Boyd had a strong outing for most of the game. He kept Milwaukee’s hitters under control through seven innings but struggled when the Brewers attacked in the eighth.
The defeat was another setback for Chicago in the NL Central race. The Cubs are now eight games behind the Brewers in the division standings.
Crow-Armstrong, who had scored earlier in the seventh inning, has had a difficult time against Milwaukee this season. Before Monday’s game, he was hitting only 4-for-39 against the Brewers and had struck out 18 times.
Despite the late pressure from Chicago, Milwaukee held on for the victory thanks to Chourio’s contributions in both offense and defense. His eighth-inning hit gave the Brewers the lead, while his diving catch in the ninth preserved it.
The series between the Brewers and Cubs will continue on Tuesday night. Jacob Misiorowski is scheduled to start for Milwaukee, while David Peterson will take the mound for Chicago.
