Jack Edwards: Australia’s New ODI Talent

Australia has given Jack Edwards his debut in the first One-Day International (ODI) against South Africa at Kingsmead Stadium in Durban on Thursday. The all-rounder, who can both bat and bowl, replaced Pat Cummins, who rested due to workload management ahead of an important Test series.

Edwards received his 254th Australian ODI cap from Cummins before the toss. With Cummins out, Mitchell Marsh, the T20I captain, led the team and chose to bowl first in a cloudy morning.

Australia comes into this series after winning all three ODIs against Zimbabwe. However, they have never won a bilateral ODI series against South Africa. As World Test Champions, Australia aims to change this streak. The series also serves as preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Edwards has strong domestic credentials. Playing for New South Wales, he has scored 882 runs in 36 List A matches at a strike rate of 90.18. With the ball, his right-arm medium pace has taken 24 wickets at an economy rate of 4.92. Originally scheduled to play for Australian A in India, he was called up to South Africa as a last-minute replacement for Billy Stanlake due to injury.

Edwards made his international debut earlier this year in a T20I against Pakistan. He conceded 25 runs and took no wickets, with Australia losing the match.
