Justice B.R. Gavai Takes Oath as 52nd Chief Justice of India
Justice B.R. Gavai officially became the 52nd Chief Justice of India after taking the oath of office on Tuesday. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath during a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. Senior judges, top government officials, and legal experts attended the event.
The government appointed Justice Gavai after the retirement of Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud. As the new head of the Supreme Court, Justice Gavai will now lead the country’s highest judicial body and handle important cases that affect the lives of millions.
Justice Gavai has served the judiciary for over three decades. He started his legal career as a lawyer in the Bombay High Court and later became a judge there. In 2019, the government elevated him to the Supreme Court, where he delivered many key judgments. Legal experts respect him for his fair decisions and deep knowledge of the law.
Justice Gavai comes from a Scheduled Caste community and is only the second Dalit to hold the top judicial post in India. His appointment marks a historic moment for the country and highlights the progress toward more representation in the judiciary.
After taking charge, Justice Gavai promised to protect the Constitution and uphold the rule of law. He said the judiciary must serve the people and ensure justice for all, especially the poor and the weak. As Chief Justice, Justice Gavai will manage the functioning of the Supreme Court, assign cases to benches, and guide judicial reforms. His term will last until November 2025.
