Maldives Holds Presidential Runoff Election

The Maldives is holding a presidential runoff election after no candidate obtained the required 50% of votes in the initial round. The runoff features incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih facing off against Mohamed Muizzu, the candidate from the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People’s National Congress coalition.

Muizzu, who is also the mayor of the capital city Male, secured over 46% of the votes in the first round, while Solih received 39%. Over 282,000 eligible voters are participating in the election, which will determine the nation’s president for a five-year term.
