Modi Pays Tribute to Rabindranath Tagore
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid warm tributes to Nobel Prize-winning poet, philosopher, and cultural icon Rabindranath Tagore on his birth anniversary, observed on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
Remembering Tagore’s extraordinary contributions, Modi praised him as one of India’s greatest thinkers and described him as an exceptional philosopher, educationist, artist, and literary legend whose influence continues to inspire millions across generations.
The Prime Minister said Tagore was a “timeless voice of India’s civilisational soul,” highlighting the poet’s deep role in shaping India’s cultural, spiritual, and intellectual identity.
Rabindranath Tagore remains one of India’s most respected historical figures. In 1913, he became the first non-European to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature for his globally celebrated work “Gitanjali,” bringing international recognition to Indian literature.
Tagore’s influence went far beyond poetry. He was also a renowned social reformer, composer, painter, and visionary educationist. His thoughts on education, nationalism, humanity, and creativity played a major role in shaping modern Indian thought.
His birth anniversary is celebrated every year as Rabindra Jayanti, particularly in West Bengal and by Bengali communities worldwide.
The day is observed on “Pochishe Boishakh,” or the 25th day of the Bengali month of Boishakh, and holds special cultural significance.
Across India, schools, universities, cultural institutions, and literary organizations mark the occasion through poetry readings, music performances, dance programs, discussions, and public events celebrating Tagore’s remarkable legacy.
His songs, writings, and philosophies continue to remain deeply relevant, influencing literature, art, education, and social values even today.
Prime Minister Modi’s tribute reflects the enduring national admiration for Tagore, whose timeless ideas and creative brilliance continue to serve as a guiding force for India and the world.
