Plastic Pollution and Sewage Outfalls Plague Mayor’s Ward, Causing Health Concerns

In Ward 74, represented by Chennai Mayor R. Priya, residents are facing severe challenges due to plastic pollution and sewage outfalls. Past monsoons brought neck-deep floodwaters, prompting demands for increased infrastructure projects to address flooding, pollution, and public health issues.

On Monday, a group of women from the ward walked along the polluted Egangipuram Canal near Perambur Flyover to prevent children from playing near a sewage outfall at Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, allegedly from a Central agency-owned property. Residents highlighted the high risk of infection, citing common occurrences of skin diseases and dengue in the area.

The canal is also heavily contaminated with plastic waste. Complaints about unresolved civic issues stem from a lack of coordination among Metrowater, Electricity Board, Railways, and Chennai Corporation officials. The rise of mosquito breeding and dengue cases adds to the community’s distress.

The Chennai Corporation has initiated awareness campaigns through posters to combat dengue, but residents still seek effective solutions to promote public health, education, and women’s safety in the ward.
