Reviving Tamil Nadu’s Heritage: Renovation Projects for Ancient Structures

Tamil Nadu’s Public Works Department has proposed a project to renovate several ancient buildings across the state, aiming to restore their historical significance. Among these structures are the Kalyana Mahal Chathiram in Thiruvaiyaru, the Sivaji Rajah Bhonsle building in Thanjavur palace, and the Muthammal Chathiram in Orathanadu.

These buildings, some of which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries, have suffered significant damage over time due to neglect and ageing. With projects totaling nearly ₹67 crore, the initiative seeks to preserve and revitalize Tamil Nadu’s rich architectural heritage, showcasing a blend of Maratha, Chola, Nayak, and British architectural styles. The restoration efforts include comprehensive repair work, addressing structural damage, and sourcing traditional construction materials to maintain the authenticity of these historical sites.
