Russia’s Drone Attacks Hit Ukraine

Russia launched a fresh wave of drone attacks on Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine on Wednesday, September 23, killing at least two people and injuring 23 others in the Ukrainian capital, according to Ukrainian officials. The attacks caused fires and damage to buildings and infrastructure across several areas.

The attacks came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was in New York for the United Nations General Assembly. Zelenskyy was scheduled to meet world leaders and seek continued international support for Ukraine as the war with Russia continues.

Several Russian drones targeted Kyiv during daylight hours, an unusual pattern compared with many previous overnight attacks. Local authorities reported damage to railway infrastructure, warehouses, fuel stations and other buildings. Emergency workers were sent to several districts to deal with fires and damaged structures.

The strikes also affected other parts of Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities reported casualties and damage in areas including the eastern Donetsk region, where a separate Russian attack killed five people and injured six others, according to regional officials.

The attacks occurred shortly after Zelenskyy met U.S. President Donald Trump in New York. Their discussions included possible measures to reduce the fighting, including a potential agreement to stop attacks on energy infrastructure.

Zelenskyy has said Ukraine is prepared to support an energy truce if Russia also agrees to stop attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities. The proposal is being discussed as both sides continue to carry out missile and drone attacks.

Despite these diplomatic efforts, fighting has continued. The latest strikes highlight the difficulty of achieving even limited ceasefires while the broader war remains unresolved.

Zelenskyy used his appearance at the United Nations to call for continued international pressure on Russia. He also warned that Ukraine could face a difficult winter if attacks on energy and heating infrastructure continue.

The latest attacks have added urgency to diplomatic efforts at the UN General Assembly, where Ukraine is seeking support from international partners while discussions continue over possible steps toward reducing the conflict.
