Ukraine Ready for Peace Talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Kyiv is ready to take steps toward reducing tensions with Russia, particularly by discussing a possible agreement to stop attacks on energy infrastructure.

The issue was discussed during Zelenskyy’s meetings in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. He met with U.S. President Donald Trump as international efforts continued to explore ways of reducing the intensity of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Zelenskyy said Ukraine would be prepared to support an energy ceasefire if Russia also agrees to stop attacks on Ukraine’s energy facilities. Such an arrangement could cover infrastructure connected to electricity, heating and other essential energy supplies.

The proposal comes as both countries continue to carry out attacks involving drones and missiles. Energy infrastructure has remained an important target during the conflict, raising concerns about the impact of further attacks as winter approaches.

Speaking at the United Nations, Zelenskyy stressed that de-escalation measures were needed before winter. He also indicated that stronger diplomacy could help create conditions for reducing attacks and opening further discussions.

The discussions do not represent a broader peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. Instead, the focus is currently on a possible limited arrangement involving energy facilities. Any such agreement would depend on both sides accepting and following the proposed terms.

Zelenskyy has continued to call for international support for Ukraine’s security and sovereignty while keeping diplomatic channels open. His latest comments indicate that Kyiv is willing to consider negotiations on specific measures that could reduce the damage caused by the ongoing conflict.

However, fighting continues despite the diplomatic discussions. Recent Russian and Ukrainian attacks have targeted infrastructure and other sites, showing the difficulties involved in reaching and maintaining even a limited ceasefire.

The proposed energy truce is therefore being closely watched as diplomats continue discussions in New York. If both sides agree to halt attacks on energy infrastructure, it could represent a limited step toward reducing tensions, although major differences between Russia and Ukraine remain unresolved.
