CNN, MSNBC, and Politico Sue White House Over Reporter Access Removal
CNN, MS NOW and Politico have sued the Trump administration after their journalists were barred from the White House and their press credentials were revoked. The three news organizations filed the lawsuit in federal court in Washington, D.C., on September 21, 2026.
The media organizations are asking the court to restore their access to the White House while the case continues. They are also seeking a temporary restraining order that would immediately allow their journalists to return to the White House grounds. A hearing on the request is scheduled for Wednesday.
In a joint statement, CNN, MS NOW and Politico said they were taking legal action to protect their First Amendment rights. They argued that the government should not decide what journalists can report or publish. The outlets also said the ban threatens press freedom and the public’s access to independent journalism.
The dispute began after President Donald Trump announced that the three outlets would be barred from the White House. Trump said the organizations had been reporting what he described as “fiction and lies” about his administration and called their coverage “fake news.” The White House has defended the decision, saying the outlets can continue reporting from outside the White House.
The news organizations, however, argue that the decision was connected to disagreements over their reporting. Their lawsuit says the action violated their First Amendment protections and also raises Fifth Amendment due-process concerns because their access was revoked without what they consider adequate notice or process.
The dispute has also affected the White House television press pool. CNN had been scheduled to provide coverage of President Trump’s events, but its removal from the pool led the other major television networks to suspend pool coverage rather than replace CNN. The pool normally allows major networks to share the cost and footage of presidential events.
The case has therefore become a wider legal dispute over White House press access and the limits of government control over journalists. The administration maintains that it has authority over access to the White House, while the three news organizations argue that government officials cannot restrict access because they object to the content of news coverage.
The federal court will now consider the outlets’ request to regain access as the broader constitutional case moves forward. The outcome could have implications for how presidential administrations manage press access and the relationship between the White House and independent news organizations.
