CNN, MS NOW, Politico Sue Trump Administration Over White House Access
CNN, MS NOW and Politico have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration after their journalists were barred from the White House. The three news organizations filed the case in federal court in Washington, D.C., on September 21, arguing that the decision violated their constitutional rights.
The news organizations announced the lawsuit in a joint statement. They said they were taking legal action to protect their First Amendment rights and the principle that the government should not decide what journalists report or publish. They also argued that their reporters’ White House credentials were revoked without proper notice or process.
The lawsuit asks the court to restore the journalists’ access to the White House. The outlets are also seeking a temporary restraining order while the broader case is considered. The dispute began after President Donald Trump announced that CNN, MS NOW and Politico would no longer be allowed on White House grounds. Reporters from the three organizations were subsequently denied entry and had their press credentials revoked.
Trump has defended the decision by accusing the outlets of publishing what he describes as “fake news” and unfavorable coverage. He has also argued that White House access is not an automatic right for news organizations. The administration has defended its authority over access to the White House press operation.
The dispute has also affected the White House television press pool. CNN had been scheduled to provide video coverage of presidential events, but the network was removed from the rotation. Other major television networks later halted distribution of video coverage in response to the dispute.
