Bihar Legislative Council Polls Set for October 23

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced that biennial elections for eight seats in the Bihar Legislative Council will be held on October 23, 2026. The seats are from four Graduates’ and four Teachers’ constituencies. The terms of the sitting members are scheduled to end on November 16, 2026.

The eight constituencies going to the polls are Patna Graduates, Darbhanga Graduates, Tirhut Graduates, Kosi Graduates, Patna Teachers, Darbhanga Teachers, Tirhut Teachers and Saran Teachers.

The members whose terms are ending are Neeraj Kumar from Patna Graduates, Sarvesh Kumar from Darbhanga Graduates, Banshi Dhar Brajwasi from Tirhut Graduates, and N.K. Yadav from Kosi Graduates. The Teachers’ constituencies are represented by Nawal Kishore Yadav from Patna, Madan Mohan Jha from Darbhanga, Sanjay Kumar Singh from Tirhut and Afaque Ahmad from Saran.

According to the election schedule, the formal notification will be issued on September 29. Candidates will be able to submit their nomination papers until October 6. The nominations will be scrutinised on October 7, while candidates can withdraw their nominations until October 9.

Polling will take place on October 23 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Votes will be counted on October 27, and the entire election process is scheduled to be completed by October 31.

The announcement means political parties and candidates will now begin preparations for the election in the eight constituencies. The Model Code of Conduct has also come into effect in the constituencies covered by the polls.

The Bihar elections are part of a larger round of Legislative Council elections being conducted in Bihar, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. Across the four states, 28 seats from Graduates’ and Teachers’ constituencies are scheduled to go to polls on October 23.

The election will determine the representatives for the eight Bihar Council seats before the current members’ terms end in November.
